This year Dan Gardiner talked…or gently encouraged…several members of the team to take more thought about our fitness and enter the 34th running of the Wahsatch Steeplechase. The idea was, that by committing to the race we would need to commit to the training and diet required for a foot race starting in Memory Grove up through the mountain peaks just north of the Capitol Building in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Back in 1980, a guy that was a few cans short of a six pack, named McKay Edwards conceived the Wahsatch Steeplechase. At the time there were three courses all starting from Memory Grove Park, The Twin Peaks Derby (8 mile), The Black Mountain Classic (15.5 mile) and The Wasatch Crest Marathon (26.2 mile). Today, the Wahsatch Steeplechase is a variation of those courses giving a vertical gain and loss of 8000 ft, running 17.3 miles from Memory Grove Park over Black Mountain, through Smuggler's Gap into City Creek and back to Memory Grove Park.
The race was beautiful, scenic, the right amount of competitive and the weather was right on! We tried talking the whole team into “growing a pair” and most did. Dan, Jackie, L.J., Aaron, Ryan and Randy all dug in and ran the race. Phatty D, Nick, Little J.J., Ashton, James and L.J.'s Wife all made it in time to cheer us across the finish line!
Thank you very much Steeplechase Volunteers for packing water, tables, signs, etc to provide aid stations and a marked trail. The Steeplechase team do great to keep us fed and hydrated before during and after the race. If you're up for trying something new, put it on your calendars! Here's a link to the Wahsatch Steeplechase. Always be safe, know your limits and do the research.
