Southern Colorado Road Trip

February 9th, 2007 by Dan Gardiner

The Boondockers team recently returned from a last minute trip to Southern Colorado. Last week the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado were blanketed with 2-3 feet of cold smoke, on top of an already large base. Upon hearing the news, Geoff ‘Phatty’ Dyer, Ryan Nelson, and myself packed up and drove through the night, arriving at our destination just in time to go riding. Dave Napier and his crew met up with us early Friday morning in South Fork, Colorado. Michael McCullough dropped off a nice rock just a few minutes from the trailhead.

The first day of riding we did not encounter any tracks until the trail ride home. After going nearly a month without any fresh snow in Utah, it was amazing to finally be riding the deep stuff again.

Ryan Nelson Hitting a Technical Cliff Line

Ryan Nelson surprised everyone early on day two with a technical cliff drop that required a long sidehill and a precarious run-out. With wind-loaded slopes and an unstable snowpack, we were hesitant to venture into any steep canyons or bowls, so we spent most of the second day riding more deep powder.

Unfortunately, we had to make it home for work and school on Monday morning. We snuck out before sunrise on Sunday to avoid a white-washing by Dave Napier and made it home in time for the kick off of the super bowl. Special thanks to our guides for the weekend, Ben from Farmington, New Mexico and Matt from Colorado. Next stop, wherever it snows!
