Jenn Berg Interview

August 30th, 2008 by Dan Gardiner

Jenn Berg is one of the newest members of the Boondockers team. After just 2 years on a snowmobile, she has no problem keeping up with the boys. Jenn’s real job is skiing big mountains.  She has skied everywhere from Alaska to Argentina and in between, chasing powder all over the globe.  You can check Jenn’s 2008 Warren Miller Films segment in “Children of Winter.”  She has graced the covers of numerous ski magazines including Skiing and Ski Magazine and makes her living representing sponsors: Volkl, Tecnica, Marker, DaKine, ClifBar, Snowbird and Alta.

Jenn and her boyfriend, Pete Obrien, originally bought snowmobiles to access the backcountry on skis, but they quickly found out that sledding was more than just a form of transportation. See what Jenn has to say about her newest hobby and don’t miss her segment in Boondockers aliVe-

How did you get into snowmobiling? –  Originally I was looking for backcountry lines and quality snow to ski.  A snowmobile helped me document better photos and film shots while skiing and made access to the backcountry fast and easy.
What was the transition from skiing to snowmobiling like? - Honestly, it was pretty humbling to be a pro skier and a hack of a snowmobiler at first.  If you want to look silly, try sledding with ski boots on.  On the other hand, it was easy in that I was used to physically challenging myself in the snow, already had an understanding of snowpack, and very comfortable playing around in big mountains.
Are there any similarities between big mountain skiing and snowmobiling? – For sure.  Both skiing and snowmobiling are all about balance and commitment to moves. The size and strength of a rider is less important then understanding how your body and weight control the direction of your machine or skis.

What do you enjoy about snowmobiling that you don’t get skiing? – More face shots!! On skis, you can’t do much with a meadow or frozen lake filled with powder.  But on a snowmobile… dreamy!!!  And of course… we all know that skiing is all about down, whereas the stoked level on a snowmobile is near equal both up and down.
Plans for next winter?- Ride, ride, r-i-d-e!  I want to get deeper on my powder turns, higher on hill climbs, and slow-n’-steady when side hilling.  I hope to progress my riding on my dream sled: SnowPro M8 153 for next winter.
What do you do for fun when the snow melts? –  I love motoing on my CRF 250x, mtn biking, hiking with my dog, and geeking out on the computer.  Sometimes I head down to the Southern Hemisphere to find snow in New Zealand or Argentina.

I once wrote an article called ‘Sex Sells’ In it I noted that sex sold everything… except snowmobiling. Thank goodness for Jen Berg. You are truly lovely and together with your man Pete, make a wonderful addition to the Boondockers Team.

    Thanks for everything
